Devon Matsalla
(bagpipes, pennywhistle, vocals)

Devon is Finley’s old military buddy from back when they went through artillery officer basic training in Gagetown, New Brunswick. Back in 1994, most of their first music was singing in the back of a 2.5 ton army truck on military exercises! He’s now been with the band since February, 2005, adding a whole new dimension to the band’s sound.

Devon learned the piano and bagpipes as a young boy in Calgary. Joining the military as a musician in 1991, he played with the Calgary Highlanders Pipes and Drums for two years before moving off to the Royal Military College in Kingston. Posted to Québec City in 1997, he started playing with the Shannon Irish Dancers, where he picked up the Irish whistles. Then he moved onto the Quebec City Celtic circuit, playing with the Holy Buckers and the St-Andrew’s Pipes and Drums. Then, the military saw it best to post him to Ottawa in 2004, and he played for a year with the Ottawa City Police Pipes and Drums before running into the 'Thieves.

In addition to playing regularly with the Riverthieves, Devon still maintains a foothold in Shannon, north of Quebec City, where he plays for several annual events. He manufactures his own whistles and has composed several instrumentals in the band's repertoire. He is single and works as a staff officer in the National Defence Headquarters.
